The Secret to Discovering Purpose Where You Are Now

A new venture or job can provide better alignment to one of our purposes, but sometimes we can get what we need right where we are now.

Keep reading, I’m going to tell you why you should bother impacting others in your current situation.

It was natural for me to set up an accountability group at one of my jobs. We met monthly in my boss’s office to discuss individual goals over potluck.

Goals ranged from weight loss and saving money to reducing debt and positive thinking.

Our graphic designer created individual boards where gold stars were awarded weekly. Getting that star actually became a motivator for group members.

It’s innate for me to motivate, encourage and hold people accountable. What comes natural for you and how can you use your strengths or skills to help others in your current workplace or communities?

Oftentimes, whatever comes easy for you will end up helping someone else.

Do you enjoy planning parties, taking photographs, teaching/explaining, working out, spending time with kids, managing projects, budgeting or investing?

What’s your jam and how can you share it with those around you?

If it’s not an activity, it could be a simple act of service like taking time to listen to a coworker, bringing in tasty vegan snacks or encouraging colleagues to take a break in a high-stress environment.

I’ve done all of these. OK, maybe not bringing in vegan snacks. But I’ve made a point to bring my staff donuts on Mondays and I worked another job where I wrote encouraging quotes on a dry-erase board outside my cubicle.

You can have influence where you are now. Don’t wait until you start that dream business or get that certain job.

I know some of you are thinking you don’t want to do anything for the coworkers you merely tolerate or for the job you can’t stand. Or, you may be too overwhelmed to worry about purpose in the workplace.

These are the perfect scenarios. You know why? It stems back to my core belief about purpose — it’s not about you.

Yeah, this was a tough realization for me not all that long ago. I was all about me for most of my life. I have to be intentional about sacrificing my time, my money, my feelings and my wants related to purpose and serving others.

Not easy, but much more rewarding than my constant striving for self-fulfillment.

Living and walking with purpose is true joy and puts into perspective what really matters in my life.

I no longer seek results for personal fulfillment.

To witness firsthand someone's life evolve based on personal interaction is more gratifying than any bonus, company promotion, pay increase, award or public acknowledgement.

Seriously consider having an impact where you are in your personal life or professional environment.

If you don’t have time, question whether you should change your lifestyle so you can have a positive personal impact.

You’re only running this race once here on this earth so why not leave a legacy when you’re no longer around?
